10,000 Carbon Free Homes Maine PUC
Posted: 2009-03-24
In 2006 the Maine Public Utilities Commission launched a campaign to get 10,000 people to pledge to make their homes carbon neutral, either by buying clean energy or turning down the heat and unplugging electrical devices. I was tasked with creating the website for people to find out their carbon footprint and to pledge to become carbon free.

The shell of the site was designed by Heidi Hunt at PenBay (the project manager on the project) and then I got to work coding up the functionality which included such things as a calculator (for both getting a carbon footprint and for reducing it), ways to buy clean energy, a question and answer forum. The site also had an accessible version (non-flash) for those with screen readers, though the Flex app was also accessible. Though the site was later stripped down to just the calculator when the PUC abandoned their campaign for 10,000 homes, the images are how the site used to look (without the populating copy).
